Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee is asking consumers in the Calare electorate to get behind our Australian farmers and continue buying Australian strawberries.
“If it continues, the current strawberry contamination crisis will hit our local strawberry farmers and the message we need to get out is – cut them up, don’t cut them out,” said Mr Gee.
“At a time when our communities are rallying together to support farmers affected by the drought, it is just as important that we support our strawberry farmers.
“We can use our buying power as consumers to support the industry which is valued at half a billion dollars. We can’t let the industry go,” said Mr Gee.
The Federal Government has recently announced $1 million towards assisting the strawberry industry.
“This will help to put more safety officials on the ground, increase detection and fast track recalls when they are requested,” said Mr Gee.
“The Prime Minister is introducing legislation into the parliament with harsh new penalties for people who contaminate food, including jail time of up to 15 years. I will be supporting this new law.
“Australia has a strong record when it comes to food safety and the Federal Government is working to ensure our strawberry supply is safe.
“Remember, cut them up – don’t cut them out!”
