After more than 10 years, the Wallerawang Community & Sports Club has secured a $480,000 grant through the Federal Government’s Community Sport Infrastructure program. This will allow the Club to build a new auditorium and meeting room, as well as upgrade the kitchen facilities.
Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee was joined by Secretary of the Club, Stephen Jackson and local community members in Wallerawang as he shared the good news.
“The Wallerawang Community & Sports Club is the hub of the local community, and has already secured $120,000 of in-kind sponsorship from local tradespeople to help construct the extension,” Mr Gee said.
“There is no facility of this kind in Wallerawang and once complete, will enable local community and sporting organisations to utilise the facility for events. It’s anticipated that Wallerawang Public School will also use the facility as its offsite emergency evacuation area.
“I’ve been fighting hard for this funding alongside the Club since I was elected as the Federal Member back in 2016, and I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve finally secured it after all of these years.
“Sporting facilities such as the Wallerawang Community & Sports Club are vital for inspiring physical activity and health, but also for building community spirit and pride. I know this facility will become entrenched in the local community for many years to come.”
2,053 applications were received across the country, which was far more than anticipated. To meet the obvious interest, the Federal Government will allocate an additional $30 million for projects in early 2019 from the existing pool of applications.
The Community Sport Infrastructure grant program was launched by the Federal Government in August this year, enabling sport and community organisations to apply for grants up to $500,000 to upgrade sporting infrastructure in 2018-19. The program is managed by Sport Australia, the Australian Government’s leading agency for sport and physical activity.
