COMMUNITY CELEBRATES NEW CANTEEN AT PORTLAND POOL

Whether cooling down on a hot summer’s day, getting in some serious laps, or bouncing off the diving board, a visit to Portland Pool is now better than ever following the official opening of the brand-new canteen.

The renovation, which included the development of an accessible amenities block, was supported with a $52,500 grant from the previous Federal Government.

Independent Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, joined local residents in celebrating the completion of works with a ribbon cutting at the much-loved site.

“When the sun is out in the Portland area, there's only one place to be... Portland Pool! Now, a visit is better than ever, with the brand-new canteen officially open!” said Mr Gee.

“The new kiosk is the perfect place to grab some post-dip hot chips, refill with a chiko roll, hydrate with a milkshake, or cool down with an ice cream!

“It’s great that the renovations were supported by a $52,500 grant from the previous Australian Government, which also went towards improving the amenities block at the site.

“This year, the community-owned pool will be turning 65 years old. The pool was built by hardworking volunteers in 1959, with residents and local businesses donating land, supplies, and their time and skills to establish the local swimming spot.

“Today, that strong community spirit lives on. Portland Pool is run by a dedicated volunteer team who put a lot of heart, soul, (and countless hours!) into making the pool the very best it can be. Congratulations to Shane Taylor, Simone Taylor, Rich Evans and the amazing Portland Pool team who are determined to see that the much-loved site goes from strength to strength!

“More and more people are discovering Portland – it’s becoming a real tourist destination, and its future is very bright. Investing in upgrades to local recreational infrastructure like this is an investment in the future of Portland,” Mr Gee said.
